C. S. police car recovered

Nearly two weeks after being stolen, a Crystal Springs police car is back in the hands of local police officers.
The car, which was stolen during an attempted traffic stop January 4 was recovered from the parking lot of an apartment complex in Jackson.
According to Crystal Springs Police Chief Chris Palmer, the suspect in the case, Jesmond Rockingham, 26, of Hazlehurst was observed by a Crystal Springs officer running a stop sign. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle and it sped away, but soon hit a light pole. The driver abandoned the Chevrolet truck and allegedly tussled with the officer and took the police car.
Friday afternoon, according to Palmer, officers and members of the Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT team went to a location the suspect was expected to be in Hazlehurst. The suspect was not found, but turned himself in later Friday night.
Palmer said the car was parked in the Jackson parking lot and was not damaged.
Rockingham is charged with grand larceny and assault on a police officer. Both are felony charges. Tuesday morning, Rockingham was still in jail in lieu of a $70,000 bond.
